Facts

The County Seat is Medina, Ohio. It was created on February 18, 1812 from Portage County.

Medina takes its name from an Arabian city, Medina, Saudi Arabia, in which Mohammed is buried. The county seat was originally named Mecca, but it is presently called Medina.

The city of Medina is known as the home of the A.I. Root Company, manufacturer of beekeepers' supplies and the third largest processor of beeswax. Nearby Wadsworth contains a branch of Kent State University.

Principle industries in the county include; metals, rubber, food, machinery, mathches, candles, aluminum castings, furnaces, automobile parts and dairy products.

Probate Court has birth & death records to 1909, marriage & probate records; Health Department has birth and death records from 1909; Clerk of Courts has divorce & civil court records from 1818; County Recorder has land records.

It's Neighbors are: NORTHEAST is Cuyahoga County, EAST is Summit County, SOUTH is Wayne County, SOUTHWEST is Ashland County and NORTHWEST Lorain County.

History

MEDINA COUNTY was formed February 18, 1812, "from that part of the Reserve west of the 11th range, south of the numbers 5, and east of the 20th range, and attached to Portage county until organized." It was organized in April, 1818. The county was settled principally from Connecticut, though within the last few years there has been a considerable accession of Germans. The surface is generally rolling, with much bottom land of easy tillage; the soil is principally clay and gravelly loam - the clayey portion scantily watered, the gravelly abundantly.
